New school and old school collide here. New Music Seminar in New York last week was a 2.5 day collision of industry minds talking strategy and technology in today’s music market. Summer’s on, in Houston. For the second year, the independent paper, Free Press Houston, hosted the Free Press Summer Fest—a two-day mix of music and mud. Free Press promotes recycling and environmentally-friendly causes throughout the event. 100+ bands/DJ’s performed—double from last year—and included headliners like The Flaming Lips, Kid Sister, and Dead Prez. UMF is an annual electronic music festival in Miami’s Bicentennial Park, and is the official closing event for WMC—a music industry panel/workshop event for DJ’s, producers, label reps, and the like. This year—for the first time ever—UMF completely sold out, and announced that next year this 2-day multistage dancefest would expand to 3 days. 25 photos.
