Crowdfunding website RocketHub was launched in January 2010 by three musicians/entrepreneurs—Brian Meece, Vladimir Vukicevic, and Jed Cohen. (tonic.com) Meece was speaking above in his August 2010 interview with CDBaby podcaster Kevin Breuner. Meece continued with more details:

“The single most popular price point on RocketHub, by far, across the board, is $20. So what that means is make your $20 price point really jump off the shelf. Make it really exciting, make it really fun, because that’s what you’re going to move the most of likely. Another very popular price point is the $100 price point, which I also found very intriguing. The $100 price point typically are folks that have built up a lot of trust, or have been following you a little longer. They may be inner-circle folks, you know, your Uncle Bobby from Texas that loves everything that you do and buys 20 of your CD’s everytime they come out, but, you know just loves the fact that he’s got a nephew who’s making records. That’s where he’s probably gonna’ land. You’d be surprised who lands there, but it’s a very, very popular price point. … As a result the average contribution, it hovers day to day, but it’s in about the upper $50s. $57–$59 is the average across the board. So that’s very interesting because when we look at that average number, we could start to say if I wanna’ hit $500, then I need about 8–12 people to really hit that number—not a lot.” (<a class="citation" href="http://cdbabypodcast.com/?p=915" rel="external" title="This part is about 25:00–28:00 in.

Mac computers rock, but I’m no apple addict. When I talk on my iPhone 3G I feel my head melting like a $2 burrito, and even though iTunes launches every time I sync, I’ve never purchased music on iTunes. (I have downloaded apps.) The bottom line of this microwavable disclaimer is that I’m not your average music consumer.

Device Dependency

Apple continues to create a major dependence on iTunes through their mobile products—the iPod, iPhone, and iPad—and I don’t think that anything is going to “kill” iTunes without a war. iTunes is the 7-Eleven of media—it’s more convenient and expensive, but it’s closer to home. For many, the iTunes experience is ingrained behavior—a household name—and part of their daily commute so to speak.

7-Eleven is a major convenience store chain throughout N. America, Asia, and Australia. This one’s in Manhattan.
Photo: rhockens/Flickr

Generation Gap

The second huge advantage Apple has is the generation gap. Older people are more likely to have money to spend, and are less likely to adopt something new—especially if it’s less convenient. For Spotify to compete stateside, it will start through today’s youth. I love the Spotify concept, its mobility, and its adaptivity. They are smart to develop/test/improve their service in one location (Europe) before attempting to roll it out in another market (U.S.)—that’s business expansion 101. I hope that Spotify becomes a hit in the U.S. mainly for the sake of the music. Who wants an iTunes monopoly?

Spotify’s Game

Tuesday, Mark Mulligan from Forrester Research posted some great points on Spotify’s rise. He highlighted simplicity, social integration, and cloud-based infrastructure as factors that are rolling Spotify into an iTunes-plus-Last.fm experience:

Mark Mulligan: Spotify becomes a social experience. Spotify has always had a keen sense of how to coexist in the broader ecosystem rather than try to do everything itself (cf. integrating audio scrobbling). It has now taken that a step further with Facebook integration and relatively sophisticated sharing and interaction. Doing it in the context of Facebook simplifies the education process for users. [...] By blurring the distinction between local and remotely stored music, [Spotify] establishes the platform for a truly cloud-based music experience that goes far beyond a streaming music one.
(Spotify Puts The Crowd In The Cloud With Ambitious New Featuresets)

Apple Affinity

Apple products have strong affinity, and an army of enthusiasts drinking their Slurpees. Anyone looking to compete with them has to have an equal or greater affinity, and/or introduce something totally disruptive (which Spotify has done to a degree). Spotify has game, but so does Apple, who made a calculated move with last year’s Lala acquisition. One big thing to remember is that music has always been about the experience, and it always has been.

He argues that with music, context trumps content because music creates emotional bookmarks in our mind. Simply, the song is an emotion. These emotional bookmarks are significant because they enable us to travel backwards in our memories to when we experienced the music. Consumers are in control of the music industry, and access rules:

04:25: We hear a lot of discussion about “content is king.” Well we have to have content, granted, but content comes from your imaginations. But it’s the context that is now king. I mean think of what’s happened withinside the music business where over the last ten years, through litigation, through legislation, the business has tried to change the behavior of tens of millions of teenagers. When are we ever going to learn we cannot change the opinion of teenagers? We keep trying it generation after generation and you’d think that we would learn from history. You cannot litigate behavior and you cannot legislate behavior. What you can do is listen to it, and listen well, and understand behaviors. If the music business could accept the fact that a song is an emotion, then they’d understand that the monetization of that emotion is the business.

09:53: The iPod’s over. Apple knew that. They created something new—it’s called an iPhone. An iPhone is about behavior. It’s not about owning content. It’s about behavior. And then when they opened up that app store to allow everybody else to put their ideas in, that’s when it really took off. I mean eighteen months ago that business didn’t even exist, and now they’re doing 6.6 million downloads of applications a day. From zero. All they’ve done is crowdsourced the imagination of the world. So let’s crowdsource the imagination of that world to save the music business.

Pandora is the radio powerhouse, but MySpace Music, disturbingly, has the highest traffic, and MySpace acquired both Imeem and iLike this year. iTunes is omitted here because it’s not web-based—yet—but clearly it is widely used. The top three percentage gainers were Grooveshark, Lala, and Spotify. Grooveshark has shown the most consistent growth throughout the year, and let me tell you I think it’s going to be a Jaws-like monster (especially when it goes mobile). It delivers free full-on cloud-based streaming and user uploads. Grooveshark’s iPhone app is pending Apple’s approval, but I wonder if Apple will be reluctant to approve it because it would be sharp competition with iTunes and their newly acquired Lala. It’s no surprise that Google was also looking to buy Lala—maybe they’ll turn to bite Grooveshark. Grooveshark’s minimalistic home page is even Google-esque, and there’s something to be said for simple design. Being curious as to mobile applications’ influence on website traffic, I listed available mobile apps with the sortable data below.

Tweets about Apple acquiring Lala have been flooding Twitter for 3+ days now. A number of sources have provided news and analysis on the acquisition. Personally I think Apple aims to move iTunes to the web in an effort to control mobile cloud-based music streaming via iPhones and iPods. Mobility is paramount, and I think that buying Lala was a sound move for Apple. By combining the best features of iTunes and Lala, Apple should be able to make a more seamless streaming experience with a simpler payment process—a simple payment process leads to more people buying. You can bet there will be an iPhone app that enables buying and simplifies the buying process.

Die-hard Lala users hope that Apple will keep Lala’s key features in tact, and many are looking forward to new feature possibilities. Hopefully with the help of its Lala’s developers, Apple will be able to build onto Lala’s platform making music more accessible. Lala enables users to upload mp3′s from their computer so they can access them from anywhere through their Lala account. In Lala’s words, “Play it anywhere on the web. Most of your music will be matched to Lala’s catalog [and] any remaining unmatched MP3s can be uploaded to Lala.”

A massive user-submitted music library is being built in the cloud. What I’d really like to see is for everyone’s uploads to be available to everyone, much like they are in Grooveshark—a free music streaming service that lets users upload tracks to the cloud. Let’s compare their relative popularity with other some streaming/download services—Spotify, MOG, and Amie Street—in the graph below:

What’s worth noting about MOG having the most visitors is that MOG markets itself more as a social network—their tagline is “Discover People Through Music and Music Through People.” Having social features clearly plays a big role in web-based music discovery—it’s social music discovery. Extended stats and analysis are to follow in Part 2 later this week.

Enter the mobile music frontier—the age of the app is here—and you don’t need to be a developer to create your own iPhone app anymore. Here are <del>three</del> four platforms that enable artists to build their own custom mobile applications.

iLike artists can create an iPhone app through their iLike artist account. This looks like the the easiest, most basic, and inexpensive of the three options. Your app automatically integrates with the media content in your iLike artist profile. Currently it’ll cost you a one-time $195 to activate your app. You can choose to make your app free with the clause that iLike may place ads in it, or you can sell your app in a 50/50 split with iLike. View details and video demo.

Mobile Roadie is a flexible service geared for musician iPhone app creation. Their app features are interactive and viral. They include deep social network integration with YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, and Flickr. Fans have the ability to stream content, comment, upload photos, and purchase tickets and merchandise through the app. A band can sync their updates with their RSS feeds and social-network accounts, or they can update them through Mobile Roadie’s content management system. Their current basic pricing for musicians is $499 set-up + $29/month (covers the first 1,000 installs of the app each month—subsequent installs cost 1 cent each). Extras include “push notification” which uses geotagging to target fans in a specific region. If you opt for Mobile Roadie then please use our 10% discount referrer code virtual or this sign-up link. Watch video demo. View apps created with Mobile Roadie in the App Store.

Kyte is an online and mobile video platform providing on-demand content delivery and feature-rich application development for iPhone, Blackberry, Android, and Nokia devices. Their mobile app frameworks page details the key features, add-on modules, customizations, and monetization possibilities of their apps. The modules include RSS, Twitter, multimedia chat, content streaming, downloads, comments/ratings, fan media uploads, events, location-aware services, games, fan club sign-ups, and mCommerce. Kyte no doubt offers an immense customizable feature set and it is presumably more expensive than the aforementioned alternatives. You have to inquire for exact pricing, but I believe that they charge on a monthly basis for their service at different levels based on features and usage. Update—I received an email response from Kyte with the following details: Kyte iPhone Applications are available as an add-on component to the Kyte Platform and cost an additional monthly fee of $600 per app. The Kyte Platform tiers start at $500/month (plus set-up) and go up into the thousands. Kyte is a power solution for musicians with a massive fanbase.

Did I mention that these services handle the submission process to the Apple iTunes Store for you? Please share how you’re using these for your band etc. Plus, what other platforms am I missing? Update: we were informed about a new 4th platform via the comment section below. Here’s the 411:

MobBase is an iPhone app creation platform designed for musicians and brought to you by the collaborative remix community MixMatchMusic. MobBase launched today and its options enabling musicians to connect with their mobile mob include streaming audio, RSS, Twitter integration, videos via YouTube, photo albums via Picasa, artist info, events, ticketing, and merch. It looks affordable too—their current pricing for free apps is $20 set-up + $15/month (covers the first 500 installs each month—an additional 1,000 installs costs an extra $5). For paid apps, the set-up fee is the same, the monthly rate starts at $20/month, and you keep all the revenue from the sales. Digital distribution company IODA has partnered with MobBase as the app solution for its artists and labels. More detailed coverage is at RWW. View apps created with MobBase in the App Store.

Update 2: More app services for musicians have hit the scene—see app services.
