By Ryan Van Etten on 04/22/2012

During SXSW 2012 Billy Corgan shared some rockable insights for indie musicians. “At the end of the day you always have to focus on the fact of quality first and everything else comes second” he says in the video below. (4:00) Corgan talked at SXSW about how artists need to create experiences that translate to [...]

Price Point Game

Price Point Game

By Ryan Van Etten on 12/30/2010

The median price point on RocketHub…and other crowdfunding platforms for that matter…is 20 bucks. … Make your $20 price point really jump off the shelf. –Brian Meece, RocketHub co-founder. Crowdfunding website RocketHub was launched in January 2010 by three musicians/entrepreneurs—Brian Meece, Vladimir Vukicevic, and Jed Cohen. (tonic.com)  Meece was speaking above in his August 2010 [...]

The Making of SLeuX: Interview with Producer/Guitarist Chris Dinardo

The Making of SLeuX: Interview with Producer/Guitarist Chris Dinardo

By Ryan Van Etten on 11/11/2010

The building used to be a bank. But in December, 2004, when I first met Chris Dinardo, the sign on its door read “SMR Studios.” Chris, and two of his hard-rock bandmates, from DownNeck had opened the rehearsal-recording space there in Garfield, NJ and were running their own label, Saturday Morning Records. I discovered the new studio via Craigslist—

VideoSong Schooled The Video Star

VideoSong Schooled The Video Star

By Ryan Van Etten on 07/14/2010

VideoSong is medium defined by Jack Conte with two rules: 1. What you see is what you hear (no lip-syncing for instruments or voice). 2. If you hear it, at some point you see it (no hidden sounds). Jack is one half of the indie music duo Pomplamoose, who chose video as their social medium of choice largely due to the magnetic attraction emitted by YouTube.

Bay Area Beatmaker Freematik Makes Album with iPhone

Bay Area Beatmaker Freematik Makes Album with iPhone

By Ryan Van Etten on 03/17/2010

Freematik (Tom Freeman) is a San Francisco-based hip hop music producer. But outside of his fully-equipped studio, he is armed only with his iPhone and imagination. For months he’s been experimenting with apps that let him make beats and riffs on the go. The iPhone’s limitations forced him to improvise and he found himself feeling “more creative than he had in while.”

Fans Take The Power Back—RATM’s Facebook-Induced No. 1

Fans Take The Power Back—RATM’s Facebook-Induced No. 1

By Ryan Van Etten on 01/24/2010

Bill Burton: “Sometimes we limit ourselves by what we believe we can do. We don’t even start. We don’t even try.” Burton delivered this powerful point in his TEDx talk last week, called How To Have A Christmas Number One Single, where, citing RATM’s rise to UK Xmas no. 1, he exemplified the boundless force of social media, and, through a storytelling memorization activity, he demonstrated the limitless—but often unrealized—potential of the human mind.
