<p id="device-dependence">Apple continues to create a major dependence on iTunes through their mobile products—the iPod, iPhone, and iPad—and I don&#8217;t think that anything is going to &#8220;kill&#8221; iTunes without a war. iTunes is the 7-Eleven of media—it&#8217;s more convenient and expensive, but it&#8217;s closer to home. For many, the iTunes experience is ingrained behavior—a household name—and part of their daily commute so to speak.</p>

<p>The second huge advantage Apple has is the generation gap. Older people are more likely to have money to spend, and are less likely to adopt something new—especially if it&#8217;s less convenient. For Spotify to compete stateside, it will start  through today&#8217;s youth. I love the Spotify concept, its mobility, and its adaptivity. They are smart to develop/test/improve their service in one location (Europe) before attempting to roll it out in another market (U.S.)—that&#8217;s business expansion 101. I hope that Spotify becomes a hit in the U.S. mainly for the sake of the music. Who wants an iTunes monopoly?</p>

<p class="reverse long">Tuesday, <a class="twitter-profile eee" href="http://twitter.com/mark_mulligan" title="twitter.com/mark_mulligan" rel="external">Mark Mulligan</a> from Forrester Research posted some great points on Spotify&#8217;s rise. He highlighted simplicity, social integration, and cloud-based infrastructure as factors that are rolling Spotify into an iTunes-<i>plus</i>-Last.fm experience:</p>

<p>Apple products have strong affinity, and an army of enthusiasts drinking their Slurpees. Anyone looking to compete with them has to have an equal or greater affinity, and/or introduce something totally disruptive (which Spotify has done to a degree). Spotify has game, but so does Apple, who made a calculated move with last year&#8217;s <a href="http://virtualmusic.tv/2009/12/lala-apple-mobile-music-and-cloud-based-streaming-part-1/" title="Lala, Apple, Mobile Music, and Cloud-Based Streaming">Lala acquisition</a>. One big thing to remember is that music has always been about the experience, and it always has been.</p>

UMF was a sellout event, but only a few photographers seemed to capture it. Adam voiced his frustration that for such a huge event like UMF, only a relatively small amount of decent media makes it to Flickr and YouTube. This year I saw a staggering amount of people with their cameras and video cameras in the air. People were recording entire DJ sets on their Blackberrys and someone had an iPhone just taking photo after photo which meant I didn’t even see the entire Swedish House Mafia set due to his phone being in front of my face the whole time. Where did his photos go? Why didn’t he post them? Because I saw the photos and they fucking sucked. There&#8217;s a reason why old media will be around for a long time. <p id="for-flickrs-sake">This got me to thinking—I definitely agree there were slim pickings of decent UMF photos, and a lot of them had embedding disabled or obnoxious watermarks. For <i>Flickr&#8217;s</i> sake people, use tags, and allow embedding and all-sizes viewability. For the love the Internet, use a Creative Commons license. <i>Here&#8217;s where you can set this: Flickr » You » Your Account » Privacy &amp; Permissions » Defaults for new uploads » What license will your content have?</i> I also wish Flickr&#8217;s advanced search had more filtering options—like <i>most favorited</i> and <i>most comments</i> for a start.</p>

<p id="quality-vs-memory">Snapping outstanding amateur music photos takes a lot of effort. Sometimes by concentrating on taking photos/videos, one misses much of the actual experience. On the flip side, I think many people snap photos for the sake of the memory, and not the photo itself. Even a dark, blurry photo will trigger the memory of the concert for years down the road. There&#8217;s a sentimental value to it. It may depend on the person and their motivation for taking the photo. People also might take photos to help them tell a story or have a way to share their experience with their friends or family—whether it be in person or via MMS, Facebook, etc. One obvious advantage to digital photos is that you can take millions of them without buying film. But the 5&#8217;1&#8243; chick behind the dude with his iPhone in the air all night might tell you otherwise. Me, being 6&#8217;1&#8243;, I&#8217;m pretty much in the way of most people in a concert situation like that—even without a camera. I tend to be pretty conscious about who I&#8217;m standing in front of because I don&#8217;t want to block anyone&#8217;s view. A little consideration for the people around you can go a long way. As far as the amount of quality citizen journalism, the sheer volume of online content is humbling, and there is plenty of quality out there, but many of us are missing it because we don&#8217;t always know where or how to look. Now, I ask:</p>

<p id="paramore-outperforms">Why do I like Paramore? They are kick-ass live performers. But I&#8217;ve never seen them in person. Hulu delivered them to me last year when I saw them perform <a href="http://virtualmusic.tv/2009/10/paramore-music-site-of-the-month/#paramore-on-conan-obrien" title="Watch the video."><i>Ignorance</i></a> on Conan O&#8217;Brien. I knew of them before via Andrew Kendall&#8217;s <a href="http://version3.andrewkendall.com/photography/paramore/paramore_250807_2" title="Paramore Reading Festival '07 photos" rel="external">photos</a>, but seeing them on Conan is what engaged me to find out more. I searched &#8220;<a href="http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=paramore+live" title="YouTube search results: paramore live" rel="external">paramore live</a>&#8221; on YouTube. I was impressed with their energetic live show and fan-driven <a href="http://www.paramore.net" title="Parmaore.net" rel="external">website</a>, which I <a href="http://virtualmusic.tv/2009/10/paramore-music-site-of-the-month/" title="Paramore | Music Site of The Month | VirtualMusic.tv">wrote</a> about highlighting their fan community and presence in the social web. Paramore fans go the distance because Paramore does the same for them.</p>
<h3 class="reverse">Live music trumps studio recordings.</h3>
<p id="live-music-rules">The best music is live music. Right now I think live video footage is the next best thing—whether it&#8217;s live-as-in-streaming or recorded live events. I don&#8217;t have a cable television. But if I&#8217;m looking for home entertainment I go straight to Hulu. As far as TV goes, if it&#8217;s not on Hulu, then I don&#8217;t watch it. In today&#8217;s music industry putting out video content is a must, especially live video content. In fact I think that&#8217;s where über-commercial <a href="http://virtualmusic.tv/2009/12/vevo-launch/" title="VEVO Launch Tonight—Do You Viva or Veto?">Vevo</a> has it wrong—lacking rawness and intimacy. I&#8217;d rather watch bands on Hulu. The concert videos already on Paramore&#8217;s channel come from their live album <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001IB63KQ?ie=UTF8&#038;tag=virtualtv-20&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=390957&#038;creativeASIN=B001IB63KQ" title="The Final Riot! on Amazon" rel="external"><i>The Final Riot!</i></a><img src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=virtualtv-20&#038;l=as2&#038;o=1&#038;a=B001IB63KQ" width="1" height="1" border="0" alt="" style="border:none !important; margin:0px !important;" /> In my opinion, Paramore&#8217;s best videos are the live ones, and on top of the stellar performances the videos have stellar production. Hulu&#8217;s music content is hi-fidelity and free. Now what more can you ask for besides, well, more Hulu artist channels and frequent content, right?</p>
